Writing for money
The purists tell me that writing is only about cultural identity, about aesthetics, about art and life. They are wrong. Writing is about anything you want it to be that calls to you or which makes you take action.
I have written books about heart and soul, about investment, about the process of money in life, and about expressing myself. I have written books for the purpose of understanding my heart and soul, for the purpose of understanding investment, to better understand the process of money in my life and to better express myself. (Are you getting the link yet?). Too subtle? I hope not.
My own view is that if you are going to sit at the keyboard or dictate to a digital microphone, or collate some handwritten notes that someones edits for you, you should get a reward for the process of giving your time away to the writing.
Would you go to work in exchange for no pay? Would you volunteer your time for something you are passionate about while hoping that the charity or good cause receives something of value in return? (Hopefully you are seeing the link now.)
When you write do it from a place of valuing your time, your skill and your experience. Treat your writing as being of great worth, even when it is just a simple blog like this! Often the value given to some writing by the reader is the first place that the assessment and gratitude comes from. In other words, while you might be writing primarily to express yourself and to make sense of some of your personal thoughts, the reader gets something completely different. That’s fine too.
Nick Sturgeon facilitates a Non-Fiction Writers’ Retreat each year. In November 2008 it is on the Yorkshire coast close to historic Whitby.
